A 40-year-old Muslim woman lost an eye as a result of a racist attack in Yekaterinburg, Russia according to an October 26, 2007 report by the Novy Region news agency. Nasima Akhmetova--a Russian citizen who journeyed from her village in the Republic of Bashkortostan to Yekaterinburg in search of work--was attacked on October 18 by three youths as she waited for a trolleybus. Without any provocation, the assailants started to beat her, one of them reportedly screaming, "I hate all of you non-Russians!" One of the youths poured alcohol (a substance forbidden to devout Muslims) into her mouth as she lay on the ground, after which another took out a long metal device and plunged it into her eye. Ms. Akhmetova lost consciousness and went to a hospital after waking up a few hours later. Doctors removed a 10 centimeter long metal fragment from her eye, but were unable to save it. Unfortunately, the victim was unable to give a concise description of her attackers, and no arrests have been made.
