Culture Ministry Directs Local Culture Departments Check Libraries For Chauvinistic Literature

(Ukrainian News, 08/19/2008) The Culture and Tourism Ministry directed local culture and tourism departments of state administrations to check libraries for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.The Culture Ministry made this statement.The ministry sent relevant letters to local culture departments following numerous requests of public organizations asking the Verkhovna Rada's committee for culture and spirituality to check for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.Results of the checks will be used when the Culture Ministry will be drafting the state program of libraries' development.Apart from this, the check in quality of the library stock will allow focus on needs of every region when buying literature to replenish libraries.As Ukrainian News earlier reported, in July Luhansk regional council addressed President Viktor Yuschenko, the Cabinet of Ministers, and Verkhovna Rada with a request to prevent withdrawal of communist and chauvinistic literature from libraries and educational institutions of Ukraine.
