Two recent stories are indicative of the growing power of the paramlitary Cossack movement. Paul Goble reports that there are more self-identified Cossacks in the Duma now than Communist deputies. On the one hand, this is obviously frightening, but on the other, it shows the obviously ersatz nature of the Cossack movement, since apparently anybody can join (i.e. "we're Cossack too!"). The main question is what makes a Cossack, in their own mind? If it only means being a violent racist who supports the Kremlin 100%, then this is a truly disturbing development.
In a related development, the country's largest Cossack group--the Invincible Don Host--all but promised violent actions against minority Christians.

Корниловым.

The December 2007 (issue #49) edition of the newspaper "Zavtra" ("Tomorrow") published an open letter to President Putin from some of Russia's most notorious purveyors of hate speech against Jews and other minorities. The letter is signed by Academician Igor Shavarevich, former Duma deputies Yuri and Andrei Saveliev, Igor Rodionov, Victor Alksnis, and the chief editors of the nationalistic newspapers "Russky Vestnik" (A. Senin), "Patriot" (M. Zemskov), "Nasha Tribuna" (V. Gryaznov), "Duel" (Yu. Mukhin), the magazine "Grazhdanin" (N. Krivomazov), and the writers V. Khatushin, M. Lubomudrov, V.Galaktionova, N. Kartasheva, and L. Kornilov.

The authors of the letter demanded the repeal of Article 282 of the Criminal Code, which prohibits the incitement of ethnic or religious hatred. Below are several extracts from their letter.

More evidence that the Russian government is playing political games with the far-right. This group is allowed to incite violence with impunity at the same time that peaceful opposition protestors are beaten, harassed, and possibly even killed by police.

ОКЗЕ (Объединение Комитетов в Защиту Евреев в бывшем СССР) выпустило сегодня заявление, порицающее результаты парламентских выборов в России, состоявшихся в прошлое воскресенье. После масштабных и часто грубых мер, предпринятых Кремлем в последние месяцы для строгого управления процессом выборов, президент Путин и его администрация не сумели претворить в жизнь реформированной новой Думы их частые красноречивые заявления, осуждающие антисемитские и ксенофобские преступления на почве ненависти.
