(Ukrainian News, 08/19/2008) The Culture and Tourism Ministry directed local culture and tourism departments of state administrations to check libraries for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.The Culture Ministry made this statement.The ministry sent relevant letters to local culture departments following numerous requests of public organizations asking the Verkhovna Rada's committee for culture and spirituality to check for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.

Court adjourns hearing into anti-Semitism charges against journalist
The Prymorsky Court in Odessa has rescheduled the examination of the application brought by the Odessa City Prosecutor against the newspaper “Nashe dyelo” until 16 September. As reported earlier, the court has been asked to examine an article “Kill the best of the goyim” by the Editor Ihor Volin-Danilov. He is accused of “Infringement of equal rights on the basis of racial or ethnic identity or attitude to religion” under Article 161 § 1 and 2 of the Criminal Code. The defendant previously admitted guilty in part, however he claims that the offence only falls under paragraph 1 of Article 161.
U.N. Panel Concerned With Rise in Racist Attacks in Russia
On On August 4, a Geneva-based U.N. panel questioned whether Russia is doing enough to combat racism, while human rights groups said the government is partly to blame for a rise in hate crime, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Data from Amnesty International and a U.N. investigator showed that the number of racist attacks in Russia has increased since 2002, the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racism said. The U.N. panel expressed additional concern that mainstream publishing houses and media outlets in Russia, as well as the Internet promote racist views. The government does not compile figures on racist attacks, AP noted and cited the Moscow-based Sova Information-Analytical Center to the effect that at least 85 people were killed and almost 600 injured in racially motivated attacks last year.

The Platform will be a network for cooperation and information exchange. По информации Харьковской правозащитной группы, со случаями вымогательства со стороны милиционеров сталкивается каждый второй иностранец. «Мы провели анкетирование, — говорит Евгений Захаров, — в нем участвовали 68 иностранных студентов различных вузов Харькова. По итогам опроса получилось, что только двоих из общего числа ни разу не задерживала милиция». Половина из опрошенных отметили, что официальным поводом для задержания была проверка документов.
