Culture Ministry Directs Local Culture Departments Check Libraries For Chauvinistic Literature
(Ukrainian News, 08/19/2008) The Culture and Tourism Ministry directed local culture and tourism departments of state administrations to check libraries for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.The Culture Ministry made this statement.The ministry sent relevant letters to local culture departments following numerous requests of public organizations asking the Verkhovna Rada's committee for culture and spirituality to check for presence of literature publicizing communist and chauvinistic ideology.

Court adjourns hearing into anti-Semitism charges against journalist
The Prymorsky Court in Odessa has rescheduled the examination of the application brought by the Odessa City Prosecutor against the newspaper “Nashe dyelo” until 16 September. As reported earlier, the court has been asked to examine an article “Kill the best of the goyim” by the Editor Ihor Volin-Danilov. He is accused of “Infringement of equal rights on the basis of racial or ethnic identity or attitude to religion” under Article 161 § 1 and 2 of the Criminal Code. The defendant previously admitted guilty in part, however he claims that the offence only falls under paragraph 1 of Article 161.

RACISM IS ON THE UPSWING IN UKRAINE
On May 5 a court in Kyiv sentenced four individuals of about 20 years of age to 13 years in prison each for beating a Korean national to death in 2007. According to 1+1 TV, this was one of the very few sentences that have been delivered in the country to punish xenophobia. The four refused to plead guilty, even going so far as to make racist remarks in the courtroom. They plan to appeal.

Verdict over the killing of Nigerian national Kunyon Myevi Hodi* in Kyiv
The Darnytsky District Court on Friday issued its verdict over the killing of Nigerian national Kunyon Myevi Hodi* in Kyiv near the metro station "Poznyaki" on 25 October 2006. Of the group of four people whom the criminal investigation unit believed involved in the attack or present at it, one appeared as a witness and one came under an amnesty as being underage.

Verdict on Kunuon Mievio Godi' murder case
On 17 April 2008, Darnytskyj distirct court of Kyiv announced a verdict on a case of Kunuon Mievi Godi's murder in Kyiv on 25 October 2006.
Out of three accused, one - Yermolin - has been amnistied as an underage about a month ago. Out of two remainig, one - Oleksandr Shepitko - has been accused of murder and racism (art.115 part 2 and art.161 part 3 accordingly). On the first one he's been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment, on the second - 4 years. Using system of partiall adding of the sentences art.70 of Criminal Code), he's got 11 years in total.
Another one, Yana Kamlyuk, has bee accused of racism and sentenced to 4 years 6 months imprisonment (art.161 part 2). They've got 15 days to appeal against the sentence
